A one time or another, you’ve seen a homeless mother and child roaming around in the cold, desperately looking for shelter. You’ve been at the stop light and wondered whether or not to give the loose change in your cup holder to the man with the card board box sign. Maybe he needs it. Maybe he’s panhandling . Maybe he has a car better than yours and this is all some sort of scam. But just maybe he’s you’re test. Here’s a fact , homelessness exist. Crippling depression exist. You know the kind that’s so intense it makes a person refuse to get out of bed, go to work and pay the bills. The kind that can lead to homelessness.
You may be wondering should I get involved? Should I give back. The answer is yes. You have my permission to disregard any negative, unfruitful thoughts that are attempting to evade your judgement on this subject. I can give you a million reasons why it’s important to help those less fortunate than you. But I’ll lead with this one.
Proverbs 19:17
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
As servants, we are called to serve. Not because it’ll get a ton of likes on social media. Or because it looks good on a college or job application but because it’s your opportunity to be an ambassador of Christ and to serve those who can’t serve themselves. I can’t think of a more humbling job than that can you?
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering
- Colossian 3:12
“And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”
- Colossian 3:14
So the next time you’re out and you see something or someone and you feel the Holy Spirit tugging at your heart strings, directing you to be the change, make the effort to listen. Sometimes all it takes is a single act of kindness to turn an unbeliever into a believer. If they’ve never read a Bible or heard the truth of Christ before, they’ll know it now.
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."
-Galatians 5:25
